10 Sep 2017 - Website News and Online Renewal

Picture_2017-09-10_15_26_51.jpg

Online Membership Renewal

The sharp eyed amongst you may have noticed a small but important change in the address bar at the top of your web browser when you visit our site.

The difference is an extra 's' changing the normal 'http' prefix to 'https'. This may not seem particularly important but the change has been made to ensure a higher level of security for you when we enable online subscription payments.

Within the next week or two, as we approach the annual round of membership renewals, we will be introducing the facility to renew your membership online using  a range of credit and debit cards.

New Search Facility

Over the years our website has amassed an enormous variety of information sheets ranging from the duties of trusteeship to web security and a host of other topics.

If you visit our Information page you will now find a search facility that will allow you to search for simple terms within these documents.

23 Jul 2017 - Which Interest Group?

Email

Getting to know our many U3A interest Groups!!!

You could be missing out.

Here is one to take a look at.

Do you take pictures, make sketches, or just enjoy the views!

Did you know that you don’t have to be a photographer to… well read on to learn more.

If you enjoy getting out and about and you are more interested in just using your camera or smartphone, rather than all that stuffy indoors theory nonsense then read on?

Enjoy great days out, with maybe a nice walk and socialise with the Photographic Adventures Group members.

We go to some really interesting locations, just to use our cameras, socialise, and take nice pictures.

OK, if you want to ask your likeminded fellow members for tips on improving your shots, then you can do so, but only if you decide that is what you want to do.

And oh, you don’t need anything more than a simple compact camera or smartphone to take great pictures as it is not the camera that takes great pictures, any more than it is an expensive paintbrush that makes you a great artist!

The camera and the paintbrush are simply tools: paintings and photos are made by, guess what, people!

Click here to take a look at the pictures shown opposite enlarged

If you want to join us, then email: photographicadventures@sherburnu3a.org and ask to join our intrepid band of happy snappers.

20 Jul 2017 - Gardening Group visit to Holker Hall

Summer Learning Break Update

On Friday 15th September join the Garden Group for a great day out visiting Holker Hall and Gardens in beautiful countryside framed by the Lake District hills.

The hall, which has never been sold throughout its 400-year history is the family home of Lord and Lady Cavendish.

The current house is mostly 17th Century with a 19th Century West Wing, built to replace the original which was destroyed by fire. It is described as a delightful family home, the finest house in South Lakeland. You can tour the house without the restriction of ropes and barriers which still retains its Victorian family home atmosphere.

The gardens were begun in the 18th century and cover 25 acres of the 125-acre parkland. They incorporate both English and Italianate features and inlcude an arboretum, conservatory, terraces and balustrades. Through the years the gardens have seen changes including the transformation of an old croquet lawn into a garden room.

The gardens also feature a limestone cascade and specimen trees and the Potting Shed Gardening History Exhibition. The Good Gardens Guide says that the gardens are "amongst the best in the world in terms of design and content".

There is also a food hall stocking local produce including Holker's own seasonal meats and cheese. There is catering in the Courtyard Cafe and the Ilex Brasserie as well as picnic tables.

Holker Hall

We will leave from Sherburn at 8.30 am and arrive back at around 7.00pm. A non-refundable deposit of £11 a head for the coach must be paid to reserve your place.

Cheques made payable to Sherburn and Villages U3A should be given/posted to:
Stewart Cram
Please email: Marjorie Smith at: marjesmith@hotmail.co.uk for the postal address

The balance of £9.50 a head will need to be paid in cash on the coach on the day.

Coach travel, admission to both Hall & Gardens and gratuities are included.

14 Jul 2017 - Groups you may have overlooked

Email

Have you joined our U3A recently?

Are you aware of the number and diversity of the interest groups?

We now have nearly 60 groups.

There could be events that you may be interested in, lurking unknown to you in unlikely places.

For instance, did you know that a 3 day visit is being planned by the Science and Technology Group to the Bristol and Bath area?

The details are:

Staying at the Coldra Court Hotel in Newport on Dinner, Bed and Breakfast basis.

We will travel by coach, taking us into Bath and Bristol; we are planning to visit the newly opened Aerospace Museum, the SS Great Britain and the Bloodhound Project.

We will also be planning visits on the way there and back, to be announced later.

Now here is the really good news, the prices, which include dinner bed and breakfast for three nights and the driver’s gratuity.

For two people sharing a double/twin room the cost is £239.00 per person, and the single room rate is £269.00 each.

Entrance fees to events will be at extra cost.

This really good offer is time limited; we therefore need your firm commitment to going and a £50.00 per person deposit in the next few days, and is conditional on a minimum group number of 40.

24 places have been reserved

Less than one day left before reservations close

Making the News

Someone* once said: There is no such thing as bad publicity

However, a more realistic attitude is: “All publicity is good if it is intelligent”

Oscar Wilde was quoted as saying:

The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about.

Another great wit the Irish Republican Brendan Behan’s opinion was:

There is no such thing as bad publicity except your own obituary.

So what has all this got to do with Sherburn and Villages U3A?

Publicity, publicity and more publicity is the answer.

Why?

All Group Leaders and indeed group members can help our U3A and their groups, grow by publicising their group events and particularly their achievements.

How?

10 Apr 2017 - Sherburn and Villages U3A Group Leaders Workshop

Group Leaders Workshop Header

The meeting was split into 5 groups who each discussed the topics of encouraging a response in members so they let us know if they will be attending events and to use the tick boxes on the website to express an interest in groups.

A very lively discussion followed but unfortunately no magic solution was found.

The main thing that came out of it was how different each group was and obviously for some groups it is more critical than others, especially where money is involved. It was still good to share thoughts and realise that it is a common problem. A member’s code of conduct was suggested but most felt it would not reach the few who caused problems.

The second problem, what happens when a group gets too large, was more easily solved. Setting up a second group is not easy but has been successfully achieved by the Wine Tasting, Short Mat bowling and Book Club groups.

Ken and Alex showed us new features of the website which enables group pages to be amended and updated and pictures added, while reminding us that copyright must be respected. They offered to show individuals how to do this if necessary and to run a session with group leaders if required, there was some enthusiasm for this so we will try and set one up.

Peter told us a trial run of using BACS for new members subs was in place but there were problems which needed to be solved before it was open to everyone to use. He reminded Group Leaders that where money is involved a year end statement should be submitted to the treasurer in September. Where no money is involved it would be helpful to let him know there is a nil balance and for groups where a small sum is paid direct to the host for refreshments and no money is carried forward they can also submit a nil balance. He also asked that all emails relating to his role as treasurer should be sent to treasurer@sherburnu3a.org.

Wendy reminded us that lists of current members were sent out for group leaders to check that everyone attending meetings was a current member and that anyone who failed to renew by January had to re-join as a new member and pay £12.

Liz finished off the morning and gave us a list of items owned by Sherburn U3A which may be borrowed and included 2 screens, various sound and projection items and a marquee. Ask the committee if you are interested.

We rounded off the meeting with a good lunch and more chat and I hope that those who came enjoyed the morning.

10 Nov 2016 - Changes to our Constitution

Members attending the AGM will be asked to vote on a proposal to amend the constitution as follows:

Proposal to amend the Constitution

1) Block consent (for 150 U3As) has been granted by the Charity Commission for England and Wales to amend our constitutions as follows:

Clause 3. Currently reads “Object”

The change proposed will replace “Object” with “Charitable Purposes” as suggested in the model constitution provided by the national office.

2) Clause 15. Procedure at General and Special Meetings.

ii) Currently reads “There shall be a quorum when at least 20% of the number of members of the U3A are present at any general meeting.”

Now that we have over 500 members that would mean we needed 100 + members to be quorate. The average attendance is 80 members. Therefore the proposal is to change this from 20% to 10%. A quorum is only needed where decisions are made such as the AGM and the special meeting to agree the annual subscription.

10 Jul 2016 - Message From Our Welfare Secretary

Many of you may be aware that Sherburn U3A has a committee member who can coordinate any support that our members might appreciate from time to time as a result of health issues or other concerns.

Our Welfare Secretary, Viv Curtis can only be of help is she is aware of the member who might appreciate support and they may be reluctant to seek help. If you know of any of our members who might be in this situation, Viv asks that you let her know and she can then respond accordingly - this might simply involve sending a card of support to putting the member in touch with relevant agencies who could arrange more substantive support where needed.

Viv's contact details can be found here.

19 May 2016 - Email System

No, seriously - we did consider at times over the last 12 months that carrier pigeons might be the way forward!

We have recently moved to a third party email service (free) that appears to be giving us a much better chance of getting emails through to members: the initial results suggest that we are closer to achieving what we set out to do. The system has been in use for a couple of weeks now and has included the weekly newsletter mailing which seems to have gone smoothly - apart from a repeat newsletter sent out in error last Tuesday (my fault entirely!).

If you do suspect that you are missing an email, you can check which mailings have been sent by following the link near the bottom of the website homepage.

Best wishes,

Ken Depledge

27 Nov 2015 - We have a new Cinema Group

If you would like to know more about joining the Cinema Group, please email Group Leader, Pauline Richardson at email: pauline.rich@live.co.uk

Here is what she has to say about the group.

“As I go to the Cinema fairly frequently, sometimes with friends, but more often on my own, it occurred to me there must be members who would enjoy going to the movies, but would prefer to go with someone rather than by themselves.

Therefore, my aim for the Cinema Group is to put people who want to see the same film together. If there are a few of you, car sharing would be a good way of getting there. Also there are a few eating places at Cineworld and near it if people wanted to incorporate a meal before or after a film, you could do so.

I don't intend to have weekly or monthly meetings for this Group, but would keep members up to date with what is happening at the Cinema by email, and putting members together who want to see the same films.

Needless to say I won't be going to every film I pass on to members of the Group, as I would never be at home!!!

I've found a good time to go and see films is between 12 and 2, but if members prefer other times they will be on the information provided.

I look forward to receiving your emails."

20 Oct 2015 - Sherburn and Villages U3A Open Afternoon

Sherburn and Villages U3A held their Annual Open Day on 15th October 2015.

Once again, the event was very well attended. Over the course of the afternoon we managed to process the best part of 300 membership renewals and were able to welcome more than 20 new members.

Meanwhile, in the main hall, a number of the interest groups were able to showcase an eclectic mixture of activities to tempt both existing members and the new arrivals. The whole hall was buzzing with chatter, laughter and enthusiasm as people took the opportunity to sign up for new activities.

Did you know that our U3A can now boast an extreme activities group – to challenge the daring with experiences designed to thrill?

Your Committee are hoping that the success of this event signals the beginning of the best year yet in the history of Sherburn & Villages U3A.

If your interests are in the arts, literature, science, language, music, sport, or just getting fitter (or fatter) – there is a group just right for you. All you have to do is sign up.

8 Oct 2015 - Luncheon and Coffee Morning Groups News

After nearly six years of running the very successful Coffee Morning Group and the Luncheon Group, Pam Porter is standing down as their Group Leader at the end of this year.

Pam has looked after these groups and their events in brilliant style.

We have all enjoyed going to the various venues she has organised so well.

I know that you will all want to join me in thanking her for her sterling service.

Of course we do now need a new group leader for each group.

We must have another group leader for the groups to carry on, and one for each group would be a good arrangement.

Could this be you?

Please let us know by emailing u3alunchandcoffee@googlemail.com

2 Oct 2015 - A report on the YAHR Group Leaders workshop in Doncaster on the 24th September, 2015

Alex Svenson, Lorna Pope and I travelled to the Frenchay Centre in Doncaster for this U3A Group Leaders workshop whose avowed purpose was to assist Leaders in becoming more informed and competent in the discharging of their role. Group Leaders from all parts of Yorkshire were present and came from U3A that were quite diverse in their size and longevity. The York U3A for instance manages to meet the needs of 1,400 members which was quite a surprise to me but they clearly have the necessary organisational skills and don’t feel obliged to bring all their members to the same meeting at the same time unless they have a capacious venue I’m not aware of.

After initial introductions we were each given a copy of the U3A’s new A4 sized 43 page handbook entitled ‘More Time To Learn’. The handbook, of which I would love to have had a copy when setting up our Psychology group, consists of 6 main sections covering guidance on: the aims, obligations of, and definitions used in the U3a; the setting up of a group; the nature of participative learning; the role of the Committee in a U3A; the support of Group Convenors (Leaders) and the role of the Groups’ Co-ordinator; and the resources that are available to U3A members. It should be noted that the document uses the term Convenor rather that Leader which I fully support as I think it suggests a role of one who brings together a group of equals and whilst being taken as the senior in the group expects and respects contributions from all its members. On two pages of particular interest the booklet gives quite detailed suggestions on how to conduct the first meeting of a group and the advantages or disadvantages of meetings structured in relatively informal, middling or quite formal ways. This seems to me to be sage advice as I belong to three groups each of which operates in a rather different way according to the members’ interests and preferences.

We then split into 3 simultaneous groups whose leaders, including Lorna, discussed with us; the role of the group leader, the term we still used as old habits die hard, the common problems that can arise in the running of a group and what solutions are available; the wide range of resources that can be available to group members, some of which they may well not have been aware of; and what we considered to be good practice on the part of Leaders.

After a light buffet lunch we all met to compare notes on what we considered to be good practice in a U3A and it was at this point that we all discovered what diverse U3As we came from. Here we discussed many different issues in a calm and informal way. Included in this was the role of Group’s Co-ordinator on the Committee which was described as; chasing, challenging, co-ordinating, calming problem solving and maintaining regular contact with Group Leaders, all of which sounds like a challenging role for which I suddenly developed a greater respect.

I think that we all three came away feeling that the workshop was well worthwhile. It had explored: some new and interesting areas, had presented a wealth of suggestions for solving problems that we might not even have foreseen, had been informative particularly with regard to possible resources; had broadened our perspective on the diversity of the U3A; and was worth the journey down there.

18 Sep 2015 - Oxford Scientific Films

Hello U3A Member

I wonder if you can help. My name is Katie Boxer and I am a producer of documentary films. My company - Oxford Scientific Films - make science documentaries for ITV, and are currently making one for our long-running and well-loved series ‘The Secret Life of…’. Previous films in this strand have included Dogs, Cats, Babies and Twins. They are beautiful, heart-warming science films narrated by Martin Clunes. This one is about the ageing process and is due to be broadcast in June 2016. It’s about the science of growing older, but we will be focusing on some of the more positive and interesting aspects of the process. Topics will include health, lifestyle, longevity, wisdom, relationships, pets, grandchildren, and many more... we’re hoping to illustrate some of the latest science through visually compelling stories and engaging characters. The films have been highly praised in the past for their beautiful approach to their subjects.

One of the areas we are looking into is relationships and marriage to celebrate love at an older age, and the health benefits that having a life partner / husband / wife can have. We are looking for a couple over the age of 70 who are planning to get married this year to feature in the film and wondered whether you knew of any. We think this would be a wonderful addition to feature a couple who have found love or decided to get married later in life.

If you have any suggestions or know someone who would like to be involved, or you yourself would like to be involved, please do email me on: kboxer@oxfordscientificfilms.tv OR call on 07837104043 or 02035514612. I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who has gotten married in the last year or so.

Here is some information about the film. Please feel free to share this link and email on any notice boards if you think it would be appropriate. http://www.twofour.co.uk/news/oxford-scientific-films-secret-life-of-strand-set-to-return-to-itv/

I am also interested in speaking to any great-grandparents who sometimes look after their great-grandchildren as this is another area we are going to feature.

I would be very happy to talk this over on the phone too so please do feel free to give me a call.

Many thanks,

Katie Boxer

13 Jul 2015 - Sherburn and Villages U3A at Cawood Craft Festival

Appeal from the Chair

One of the things your committee is working on in the remainder of this year is a drive to increase awareness of the U3A in our home area.

This is as part of a national campaign to make the U3A proposition known to all third agers and to give everyone the chance to enjoy the numerous benefits of the U3A.

Benefits that we all enjoy.

As part of this campaign, we have an opportunity to showcase our U3A at Cawood Craft Festival on the bank holiday weekend of 29-31 August.

If we are to take this up we need volunteers from the membership to staff the stand over the three days of the festival and to erect our marquee and stand on the 28 August.

If you are prepared to offer your services for this worthwhile venture please reply to me with the day and time you are available, or just come and see me at the general meeting on Thursday 16th July.

3 Jun 2015 - Meeting of a new group exploring all aspects of psychology

Though a meeting of the proposed Mind Group did take place on the 29th May as only five members were able to be present the decision was taken to defer the actual inaugural meeting to a later date in the hope that with longer notice more members would be able to attend.

A meeting has accordingly been arranged to take place between 2 and 4 pm on Friday the 19th June in the conservatory room of The Owl Hotel in Hambleton.

26 May 2015 - Inaugural meeting of a new group exploring all aspects of psychology

The inaugural meeting of a new group exploring all aspects of psychology, provisionally named the Mind Group, will take place between 2 and 4 pm. on Friday the 29th May in the conservatory room of The Owl Hotel which lies on the A63 road at Hambleton. 21 Apr 2015 - Tour de Yorkshire

I hope you are looking forward to the Tour de Yorkshire on 1, 2nd and 3rd of May.

The second stage of the race starts in Selby on May 2nd with a ceremonial start in front of the Abbey followed by a figure of 8 route around the town centre before heading out through Barlby and onto the A19 where the racing begins. There will be 18 top cycling teams taking part in the event including famous cyclists like Sir Bradley Wiggins. There will also be the Selby Festival of cycling during the day with special events and attractions – the Bishop of Selby is going to lead off the cycling.

The best way to get into Selby is going to be by public transport and I am delighted that Optare – who manufacture buses, including an all-electric model in Sherburn have teamed up with Arriva to put on additional services from Sherburn into Selby on the 2nd May to support the event. The buses will stop at all the villages along the route into Selby ( South Milford, Monk Fryston, Hambleton and Thorpe Willoughby).

The service will be free – but in order to use it you will need to book in advance. Details of how to book will be announced in this week’s Selby Times.

We now need volunteer helpers to make sure the special bus service runs smoothly. Can you help?

We need volunteers to do the following

1. Deliver leaflets to homes in villages along the route. The leaflet will publicise the service and tell people how to book. Please help, even if it is only for an hour – we need to give as many people as possible the opportunity to get into Selby on the free service.

2. Ticket administration – People will be asked to book via the Internet and e-mail. The booking form will be on the Optare web site but we need a volunteer for each of the services to manage a spreadsheet – by entering each person that books – and also send them an e-mail confirmation. The passengers will then need to present this as they board the bus.

3. We would like to have two hosts on each inward bus – the job will be to greet people as they board and check tickets. The normal Arriva service will be running on the same day so you will need to direct people with tickets to the free service. There also be literature about the event to be handed to passengers. When you arrive in Selby you will be free to enjoy the day in the same way as everybody else. On the return route there will only be a need for one host. This is not an arduous task – and you can do it one way only if you wish. We will be running three service in and three or four return services ( to give people more flexibility about return times ). The inward buses will depart from Sherburn at 8.53 and 9.18 respectively.

If you were not at the U3A meeting on 19 March where I first spoke about the event you can see the slides at

Tour de Yorkshire Slides

29 Mar 2014 - Sherburn and Villages U3A hold it's fourth Group Leaders and Helpers Workshop

The 2014 Group Leaders’ workshop was again held at the Lady Popplewell Centre in Sherburn in Elmet on Saturday 29 March with over 30 Group Leaders, Deputies or Treasurers present. It was a pity that not all Group Leaders could be there, some due to illness or unavoidable absence, as everyone agreed it was an interesting, worthwhile and enjoyable morning.

After coffee Tom Derivan led participants in discussion about the changes made to the Monthly General meetings and about some of the issues that may arise in running groups. Notes were taken of ideas put forward by the participants for the Committee to discuss.

This was followed by a reminder of how to handle money in the groups and in particular the problems that arise when members expect the Group Leader to take their membership renewals instead of attending the October Renewals meeting themselves or posting their membership fees to the Treasurer.

Alex then gave an explanation of how items for the website should be submitted in a way to save him time and effort and made a plea for help. An Assistant Webmaster is urgently needed due to the growth of our U3A.

Liz Sibson thanked the Group Leaders for taking on these roles. Without them there would be no U3A. She reminded them about the Group Leaders’ Handbook which answers most questions raised.

Finally Wendy Harvey had a few words to say about membership records and the cards which every member should have to show their current membership.

The Group Leaders enjoyed talking to each other and to the members of the Committee present and the workshop finished with a delicious buffet lunch.

23 Mar 2013 - Sherburn and Villages U3A hold it's third Group Leaders and Helpers Workshop

Saturday 23 March dawned grey and snowy, cars were covered in several inches of the white stuff, the roads and pavements were slippery and there was promise of more to come. But were our U3A Group Leaders deterred? Not in the least as 30 turned up at the Lady Popplewell Centre for our third Annual Group Leaders’ Workshop.

Coffee and biscuits were a welcome start and helped thaw us out.

We were welcomed by our Chairman and then started with a short quiz. We heard about our new Behaviour Policy, followed by how to make our Webmaster’s life a little easier by using certain conventions when we send him words and photos. We had some useful discussions in small groups on how to improve our Communications and then Tom explained to us his ideas for rejuvenating our monthly meetings and making them more interactive.

It was a most enjoyable and useful morning finishing with a super buffet lunch provided by Buckles Catering.

Thank you to all who braved the weather for your fortitude, enthusiasm and participation.

31 Mar 2012 - Sherburn and Villages U3A hold it's second Group Leaders and Helpers Workshop

Our second Group Leaders workshop and lunch was held on 31st March at the Lady Popplewell Centre chaired by Liz Sibson one of our Groups’ Coordinators. Lorna Pope (Chair) welcomed everyone to the meeting and explained this was an opportunity to thank Group Leaders and those that help run their groups, enable them to meet each other and feel part of the wider organisation. She introduced all the current Committee members who were present.

Discussion topics included what does U3A mean to you and your members? how to encourage others to take on leadership and different roles, communications, spreading the word about our U3A, publicising the groups and group activities, and how you can help the Webmaster.

5 Mar 2011 - Sherburn and Villages U3A hold it's first Group Leaders and Helpers Workshop

Our first Group Leaders and Helpers workshop was held at The Lady Popplewell Centre on Saturday 5th March with 24 people present.

It was so useful to have had the talk by Terry Hardie only two days before providing much material for the workshop and enabling many questions to be answered.

Amongst other things matters relating to handling groups’ money and arranging outings and events were discussed and some useful points taken away for consideration by the Committee.

A tasty buffet lunch was delivered by a local caterer and was enjoyed by all.

The Committee will now be working on producing a handbook to refer to so that Group Leaders and Helpers can be confident they are following agreed procedures and avoiding any nasty pitfalls.
