Featured ImageSherburn and Villages U3A Holiday & Travel ventures continued its run of success with our recent trip to Lake Maggiore. My fellow travellers (Carol Marvin, Carol Stephens and Pat Davis) and I (Wendy Harvey) left on a teatime flight from Leeds/Bradford airport, arriving just in time for a nightcap in the bar of the Hotel Concorde.

We were a little apprehensive about the weather for the week, as the forecasts weren’t good. The first morning we awoke to torrential rain and we were unable to enjoy our balcony views. However the rain stopped just as we were about to begin our first of three guided walks. Then the sun came out and stayed with us every day until the journey back to the airport on our way home.

We had an excellent local guide for our walks. Although she was much fitter than us, she did allow us plenty of time to conquer the 2000ft climbs. The consolation for our efforts were the stunning views at the top.

On the other days we did lots of sightseeing, starting with a coach trip into Switzerland along Lake Lugano, returning via Lake Como. We were disappointed not to be able to call in and see George Clooney.

Our second free day was spent hopping on and off boats, visiting several of the islands on Lake Maggiore. The highlight of the day was probably the leisurely lunch we had on the terrace of a lakeside restaurant.

Although our final day dawned with 100% probability of rain, it still kept fine. We went by train to Milan and spent over an hour in the magnificent Duomo, before having lunch in the Ristorante Giuseppe Verdi. The journey back was eventful. We narrowly missed our train and had to speed across Milan by taxi to the other station to catch a different train, which allowed us to get back to the hotel with just 5 minutes to spare for a shower and change of clothes before dinner.
