Report on Book Group Meeting - Meeting, Monday, 11 April 2016

The group met on Monday to discuss "Outlander" (sometimes published with the title "Cross-stitch") by Diana Gabaldon. This is an 860 page novel which starts in 1946 in Scotland but veers back to the 1740s when the main character, Claire, stumbles through the stones in a "magic" stone circle. We had a lively discussion as some people hated the book and the phoney-sounding Scottish dialect and the unbelievable way in which Claire settled into a life, albeit with a sexy young husband, in a dangerous and hostile environment and when given the opportunity to return to the 1940s she decided to stay with her husband and the bellicose Scottish clans. "Outlander" is the first in a series on nine books; I'm not sure that any of us have got the stamina to read the whole series! Marks out of ten ranged from 1 to 8 giving an overall score of 3.6
This month's book is "The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry" by Rachel Joyce.

P.S. I HAVE RECEIVED A LATE SCORE FROM ONE OF OUR MEMBERS AND THIS NOW INCREASES THE SCORE FOR "OUTLANDER" TO 4.
