Report on After Hours Group Event - 40's, 50's and 60's Disco Night at Selby Bowling Club, Saturday, 30 April 2016
On the last Saturday evening of April 30 members of Sherburn & Villages U3A attended a 40s/50s/60s Disco at Selby Bowling Club.
The ladies displayed some wonderful costumes, particularly of the early jive era.
Tight waisted full skirts with masses of petticoats were a common theme and looked fabulous.
The sixties were represented too, with tiny mini dresses for those who could still get into them second time around.
Sadly, however, there was not a teddy boy in sight.
What is it with men and dressing up?
We danced the night away to a combination of live music and disco.
The three piece band particularly excelled with their rock and roll standards – it took us back to the days when a live band was the norm, not the exception.
The disco element managed to cover all three decades with a wonderfully eclectic mix, from early crooners through rock and roll to sixties bands.
The dancing was similarly eclectic – there was line dancing, Charleston, jive, twist, be-bop, the mashed potato, hand jive and the late 60s dancing round handbags too. Add a bar with social club prices, a pie and pea supper and a good time was had by all.
Thanks go to Silvia and Lizzie for organizing it all for us.
