Report on Book Group Meeting - Meeting, Monday, 13 November 2017

We met on Monday to discuss Bill Bryson's book "The Road to Little Dribbling" and seemed to swiftly divide into two camps - those who had loved it and those who had hated it! As is usual in circumstances like this, we had a lively discussion! A few members thought that Bryson was an arrogant American and had perhaps just tarted up his 1995 best-seller "Notes from a Small Island" with a few additions from Wikipaedia. Other members greatly enjoyed his humour and frequent references to his inner person who made cruel or nasty, but often well-deserved, comments about people or places without the words actually being uttered in public. Some of us loved the lists of British achievements in architecture and industry etc - others found them boring. It is not often that a book scores zero from any of the group but this time there were two zero marks and two top marks of 10/10 so our average score came to 4.8
Next month we shall meet to discuss "The Co-op's Got Bananas" by Hunter Davies. According to The Express "Davies is a wonderful companion, leading readers down memory lane with great chumminess that will really resonate with those of a certain age". I wonder if the Book Group will fit into that category!
