Report on Book Group Meeting - Meeting, Monday, 10 September 2018

Our group met last night to discuss "The Sapphire Widow" by Dinah Jefferies. We had high expectations as the novel was advertised as Number One on the Sunday Times Bestseller List and was also a Richard & Judy Book Club pick for 2018. The story is set in Ceylon in 1935 and although the author described the scenery, social hierarchy and climate very well, most of the descriptions were equally applicable to today as well as 80 years ago. Most of the group felt that the plot was weak and predictable, that the characters were one-dimensional but that it had been an easy, undemanding read. Scores ranged between 2 and 7 with an average of 4/10.

We shall meet next month to discuss "The Keeper of Lost Things" by Ruth Hogan, which according to The Lady magazine is "A charming read that seems bound to become a book club favourite".... we shall see!
