Report on Book Group Meeting - Meeting, Monday, 12 November 2018

Our group met last night to discuss M L Stedman's debut novel "The Light Between Oceans". It had seemed an appropriate book to read as Tom, one of the main characters, is a WW1 veteran trying to overcome the demons of an unhappy childhood followed by the horrors of fighting with the ANZACS. Tom is a lighthouse keeper and he and his wife, Isabel, live in isolation on an island off the coast of Australia. One day a boat washes ashore with a dead man and a crying baby aboard. Isabel, who has just had her third miscarriage, persuades Tom that they should keep the baby as she is a "gift from God". I will not divulge anymore of the plot but the story follows the lives of Tom, Isabel, baby Lucy and her biological mother,Hannah. Most of the group felt that the book was too long but descriptions of life immediately after the war were researched well. Most of us felt empathy for the characters and the moral dilemmas they faced.
Scores ranged between 2 and 8 with an overall average of 7.
Next month we shall meet to discuss "All The Light We Cannot See" by Anthony Doerr.
