Report on Psychology Group Meeting - Meeting, Friday, 15 March 2019

Venue: Dennis’s home in Sherburn. Members present: 3

Apologies: Wendy and Barrie.

Report of the last meeting: This was posted on the website and taken as read.

Matters discussed:

1] Definitions:
a] The topic on our agenda was, as for our last meeting, the study of personality which some psychologists, particularly Eysenck, see as belonging to the study of individual differences or as some even put it, “personology”. We began by looking at some of the various definitions of personality in current use and then went on to a prolonged but very interesting discussion of the key differences between the concept of personality and the various types of, “personality disorder”.

b] The term “personality disorders” is reserved for what are known as conditions of the mind which are not mental illnesses but intractable patterns of behaviour and expressions of attitude which cause distress to those with whom the individual is involved but are of no concern and may be rewarding to themselves. Looking at historical examples and describing the difficult personal experiences of such a person’s behaviour proved to be very interesting.

2] Further discussion:
As we were for various reasons once again small in number we decided to leave further discussion of our personality topic until next time when hopefully we will have greater numbers. Instead we discussed various issues both historic and from our working lifetimes which we felt had a psychological aspect. In fact this proved to be so interesting that our meeting ran over time until 4.50pm!

Next meeting: Our next meeting will take place on the 19th April, from 2 to 4 pm at Dennis Kirby’s home. If you require directions please email your request to me directly at:

John Moore – Group Leader.
