Report on Psychology Group Meeting - Meeting, Friday, 19 July 2019
- Led by John Moore
Venue: Dennis Kirby’s home in Sherburn. Members present: 4
Apologies: Barrie Slinger
Report of the last meeting: The meeting was cancelled as posted on the U3A website.
1] We expressed our thanks to Dennis who not only provided us with a venue and refreshments but also the use of a laptop. This was due to the U3A laptop presenting major technical problems which perhaps the combined skills of U3A members may be able to resolve.
2] We firstly read an article from BBC Science Focus mag which gave guidance on successful verbal interactions. This prompted prolonged discussion on members own experiences in particular with regard to job interviews.
3] We also read a research article from the New Scientist mag entitled, “What makes some brains more resistant to decline?” This also prompted great discussion and we concluded that much of its recommendations could be met by taking up membership of many of the U3A’s varied groups.
4] To conclude our topic on personality we then watched and discussed two You Tube videos which generated much interest.
A] The first was entitled, “Narcissist, Psychopath, or Sociopath-How to the Spot Differences”, and can be found at:
B] The second was entitled, “14 Powerful Psychology Tricks That Actually Work”, and can be found at:
5] We then decided that we would have a meeting in August and our topic would be that of intelligence.
Next meeting: This will take place at Dennis’s home between 2 and 4pm on the 18th August.
