Report on Book Group Meeting - Meeting, Monday, 9 March 2020

The group met this week to discuss "The Strawberry Thief", the fourth novel in the series by Joanne Harris about the chocolatier, Vianne Rocher, living in the village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes.  Although the novel is a "stand-alone" it might perhaps help to know who some of the characters are and how they are interwoven in the plots of the previous novels.

The group were split practically 50/50 into those who loved the novel and those who disliked it.  One of our members actually read the book twice because the story did not make much sense first time round - she loved it the second time round! Many of us found the constant change in narrator for each chapter somewhat irritating especially as you had probably read two or more pages before realising who was telling the story.  The novel reveals plots and sub-plots, witches and guilt and the thought that our children are only lent to us so we have to let them go to make their own lives.

Scores ranged between 9 and 4 with an average of 6.5

We shall meet next month to discuss Daphne du Maurier's 1957 novel "The Scapegoat".
